British Turkish Cypriots will again be participating in Remembrance Sunday services at multiple locations across London and Hertfordshire tomorrow, Sunday 8 November, with the community encouraged to attend ceremonies in their local areas to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in service.
Driving the community’s wreath-laying this year is the Turkish Women’s Philanthropic Association (TWPA) and the Turkish Cypriot Remembrance Society. They have arranged for volunteers to represent the community in Haringey, Barnet, Borehamwood and Lambeth, and at two services in Enfield.
“We would love to see as many people as possible come along and support us,” the organisers said in their Remembrance Sunday invitation. “Your presence would mean a great deal and help us ensure that the sacrifices of those who served are never forgotten.”

Remembering those who served
The Turkish Cypriot Remembrance Society grew out of an initiative by TWPA members whose relatives served with Britain’s armed forces. First announced as the Turkish Cypriot Poppy Society, it launched in North London in September 2023. Alongside organising the community’s participation in Remembrance Sunday services, the society collects family stories, so younger generations can learn about the men and women who served.
During the Second World War, thousands of Turkish Cypriots volunteered for the British Army’s Cyprus Regiment, serving alongside Greek Cypriots. Turkish Cypriot women also served, including as nurses. Read more in T‑VINE’s Remembrance Sunday archive: Britain's Forgotten Soldiers
A national two-minute silence will be observed at 11am, when the National Service of Remembrance begins at the Cenotaph in Whitehall.
